Bio

Luke Brenegan joined the Carson-Newman men's basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach on June 6, 2023.

Brenegan is in his third season as an assistant coach for Chuck Benson.

In his first season, Brenegan helped coach Jack Browder, John Zhao and Trey Hubbard to All-SAC honors with Browder, Zhao and Nick Brenegan earning CSC Academic All-America honors.

The 2024-25 season saw Carson-Newman appear in the NCAA tournament and win 20 games for a third time in four seasons.

The 2024-25 team broke the school record for total points scored in a year at 2,938. It also set school records for field goal percentage (.531), threes made (354) and free throw percentage (.780). Carson-Newman won NCAA statistical championships for field goal percentage, effective field goal percentage and three-point percentage, the final of the three marked a second straight season C-N led the nation in three-point efficiency.

The 40th player in the history of the Carson-Newman men's basketball program to score 1,000 career points, Brenegan wrapped up his Carson-Newman career with 1,115 career points and 221 career made threes.  The Greenville, S.C.-native has the sixth-most assists in school history with 363.

He is one of four players in school history at the conclusion of his playing career to knock down more than 200 career triples.  He wrapped up his senior season averaging 10.3 points per game. He canned 51 threes, a fourth straight season with at least 50 triples made.  He was one of two players on the roster to start and appear in all 28 games.

Brenegan scored in double digits in 17 games with his fifth career 20-point game coming at Wingate (Feb. 22) when he went for 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from deep.

He led C-N with 100 assists on the year, 3.6 per game, and a 2.1 assist to turnover ratio. Included in that are a pair of eight assist games against Mars Hill (Dec. 14) and Johnson (Nov. 28).

With 103 career starts, Brenegan joins Mike Ogan (139) and Charles Clark (111) as the only players in program history with more than 100 career starts.

Among his career accolades are a pair of SAC player of the week awards, one from his junior year and one from his sophomore year.  He also earned All-SAC honors in his red-shirt sophomore season, a Tennessee Sportswriters' Association State Player of the Week award and SAC All-Tournament team honors.
