Newberry controls singles in win over Lady Eagles, 7-2

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College won 5-of-6 six singles matches and won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to beat Carson-Newman on Saturday, 7-2, in Newberry, S.C.

Carson-Newman falls to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.

It was sophomore Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) who clinched a Newberry victory when she won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, topping C-N's Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.).

The Wolves added two more singles points as freshman Emily Helsel (Port Orange, Fla.) won in three sets at No. 5 and sophomore Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) took a straight sets victory at No. 6.

Carson-Newman picked up victories at No. 3 doubles as Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) and Stefy Stand combined for an 8-5 win.

Junior Tiffany Delias (Morristown, Tenn.) captured C-N's second point at No.  4 singles winning the third set in a 10-7 tiebreak.  

C-N returns to action on Wednesday against rival Tusculum in Jefferson City.  The match begins at 2 p.m.
