Eagles look to conquer Trojans in home opener
For the first time in 2021, the Carson-Newman men’s team will see action from right here in Jefferson City.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in 2021, the Carson-Newman men's team will see action from right here in Jefferson City. The Eagles (4-4, 2-0 SAC) welcome in the Anderson Trojans (2-1, 2-1 SAC) for a matchup from the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
Carson-Newman is looking to go 3-0 in conference play for the first time ever and have their best start since the 2011-12 season when the Eagles started 2-1 in conference play. The Eagles are also looking for the first ever team win over Anderson in 10 attempts.
The Eagles saw action in three road matches this past week and were able to claim two out of the possible three team victories. Last Wednesday, Carson-Newman made the journey to Hartsville, S.C where they matched up with the Coker Cobras and came away with the 4-3 team victory. Then, the Eagles made a two-day trip to the Peach State to face the North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday and the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Sunday.
Saturday saw the men's team get swept by UNG, but the Eagles bounced back to claim yet another 4-3 team win over Young Harris. In both victories last week, sophomore Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) clinched the victory for the Eagles in number three singles action. Against Coker, he saw a 6-4, 7-6 battle fall in his favor before being the hero on Sunday with his 7-5, 7-6 triumph over his Mountain Lions opposition.
This marks the first time the Eagles and Saints will battle since April 2019 when Anderson (S.C.) took the 5-2 team win and grew their series lead to an imposing 9-0 over C-N which is the second worst-margin of wins/losses for C-N against one opponent (0-11 versus four other opponents).
Last season, the Trojans finished 13-2 (2-1 SAC) ending the season on a four-match winning streak over Lenoir-Rhyne, Young Harris, Tusculum, and Augusta. Their last action for this season came on March 5 as they defeated the Limestone Saints 6-1.
Opening serve from the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex is projected for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman men's tennis at cneagles.com and on social media.
