ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior Abby Reis has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league Monday morning. The senior collected the game-winning result and helped hand #18 Queens (N.C.) their second loss in 2021 and first in SAC play.
This is the first SAC Player of the Week honor for Carson-Newman women's tennis since fellow senior Hannah Price won back in February 2021.
The Des Moines, IA native helped her team clinch the upset of #18 Queens after securing a 6-3, 6-4 victory from number six singles. This was the final of a quartet of Eagles victories after C-N dropped the doubles point to start the day. This is also Reis's second singles victory of the year as she claimed a 6-1, 6-1 result over Belmont Abbey on Feb. 13 from the Knoxville Racquet Club.
"My heart was racing and I knew I had to keep the ball in play and my teammates helped push me to victory. To get this victory, we're happy and we're really thankful."
So far in the 2021 season, Reis is a combined 2-0 in singles while being part of the number one singles pairing with junior Ana Carla Resende. In doubles, the duo sits at 8-7 overall with a 5-4 mark in SAC play.
The Eagles continue their homestand with a matchup against the visting UVA Wise Cavaliers on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with the Eagles honoring the trio of seniors (Reis, Price, and Alisa Liashova) after the match.
