Athletic Department finishes in top 60 of Learfield Director's Cup
CLEVELAND - For an ninth time in the last 11 years, Carson-Newman has finished in the top 60 of the Learfield Director's Cup.
CLEVELAND - For an ninth time in the last 11 years, Carson-Newman has finished in the top 60 of the Learfield Director's Cup.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Overall, 15 sports are counted in the final Division II Learfield Cup standings, four of which must be women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball and baseball. The next highest (11 max) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.
Carson-Newman wrapped the year in 55th bolstered by its third-highest winter standing. C-N finished the winter in 44th with 243 points. Carson-Newman set the program's record for best finish in 2017-18 when it was 21st at the conclusion of the academic year.
The Eagles finished the year with 342.75 points, good for fifth amongst SAC programs behind Wingate (2nd), Catawba (10th), Lenoir-Rhyne (22nd and Anderson (36th). C-N finished with the seventh-most points in the Southeast Region behind the four other SAC schools and the PeachBelt's Flagler (33rd) and Lander (43rd)
All told, Carson-Newman scored points in seven sports.
The spring saw Carson-Newman score points in softball (33rd - 37.5 points) and men's track and field (13th - 62.3 points).
Carson-Newman scored points from four sports in the winter. C-N netted 73 points for women's basketball's appearance in the Elite Eight. Women's swimming finished 17th at nationals to produce 57 points. Men's track, led by All-America runs from Rylan Jordan and Amine Kasmi finished 20th to get 54 points. Finally, the men's swim program with four All-America swims from Gabriel Morales had a 20th place finish and 34 points.
C-N got 25 points in the fall rankings for the volleyball program's playoff appearance.
While 10 teams made NCAA play last year, Carson-Newman got more points per sport this year, finishing with 342.75 points this year across seven sports compared to 327 points across 10 sports last year.
