Eagles fall in one-goal game with Trevecca Nazarene
Trevecca Nazarene’s (1-0) Chris Douglas scored twice in 22 minutes to lift the Trojans over Carson-Newman (0-1) on Thursday evening in Nashville.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Trevecca Nazarene's (1-0) Chris Douglas scored twice in 22 minutes to lift the Trojans over Carson-Newman (0-1) on Thursday evening in Nashville.
"I thought we deserved to get something from the game tonight," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "We started too slow and it's always difficult when you concede an early goal. The lads reacted well and deserved an equalizer and then concede another goal against the run of play. We worked very hard in the second half and could not fault the effort, just couldn't find the back of the net."
Carson-Newman's defense was tested right away. Making his collegiate debut, Elijah Buford (Atlanta, Ga.) made a save on Daniel Shiel's shot toward the target less than 30 seconds in.
Seven minutes later, Buford was tested by Phillip Collins but would make his second save.
TNU's next shot would find the back of the net. Chris Douglas scored one of his two goals, on a assist from Callum Geoghegan in the 15th minute to make it 1-0 Trojans.
Trevecca Nazarene's goal would spark some offense into C-N. The Eagles fired three shots in the next three minutes after the goal, with two of them forcing saves from TNU goalkeeper Hunter Walker.
The game would change in the 28th minute. With C-N threatening, a foul in the penalty area by Ciaran Bellis would give the Eagles a penalty kick. Senior forward Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) stepped up and buried the PK to level the match at 1.
Buford was tested twice in the 32nd and 34th minute and made saves to keep things tied at 1.
Douglas would prove to be dangerous once again in the 37th minute. The sophomore scored on a shot toward the lower left part of goal to put the Trojans in front again.
Carson-Newman's only shot in the final eight minutes was blocked and it was a 2-1 TNU lead at intermission.
The Eagles first chance at an equalizer came in the 54th minute. Maxime Wester (Brussel, Belgium.) rocketed a shot toward the left side of goal but Walker made a stop for TNU.
Thomas Lachapelle (Brussel, Belgium) got the next chance, but it was saved in the 63rd minute. Four minutes later, Wester got back in the action with a shot low that was saved again.
Buford would keep the Eagles in the game in the 70th minute. He made a save on Geoghegan's shot to keep C-N within a goal and 20 minutes to play.
C-N's last shot on goal would come in the 86th minute from Lachapelle. Walker made his sixth and final save to help TNU hold off C-N.
Buford made six saves in a losing effort for C-N.
The Eagles narrowly outshot the Trojans 16-15, but had just seven shots on goal. Wester led the Eagles in shots with five. Dukes, Howard and Lachapelle all recorded two shots as well.
Carson-Newman also held a strong advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.
C-N wraps up the week on Sunday afternoon on the road against Alabama Huntsville. First touch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
