JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman cross country hits the road for the Southern Showcase this Friday, Sept. 12, with the race scheduled for 7:30 a.m. CT at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala.
"It's a higher level of competition than what we saw last week at Converse," said head coach Brent Borden. "That's going to elevate performance. In a meet like this, you run up to competition. Out of the 50 schools there, we may get 30th place in a field where you're running against Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Furman, and these larger schools that have bigger rosters than us. You're looking to go out and compete with them. Having those caliber of runners around you really elevates you to perform better."
The Eagles are coming off their season-opening meet at the Converse Kick Off last Friday, where the women's squad earned a 2nd-place overall finish and the men secured 10th. This week's meet will see Carson-Newman line up against multiple Division I universities.
"Being in a big race where there's going to be 400 to 500 runners in the field… we need to find runners to latch on to and work together as a team through all of the chaos," Borden said.
With the first meet of the season complete, the team is settling into the rhythm of competition.
"We like to establish a good routine of what we do," Borden explained. "We practice at 6 a.m. two to three days a week, and we have to do that to accommodate class schedules. The majority of our races are going to be early in the morning, so we get people in the biological rhythm of going to bed early and waking up early. We're establishing habits through these first few weeks of training to carry into race day."
The Eagles return to action at the Southern Showcase on Friday, Sept. 12, at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT.
