C-N Wraps Up Second Day At Wingate
Carson-Newman swimming wrapped up its two-day contest with nationally ranked Wingate on Saturday at the Wingate Natatorium.
WINGATE, N.C. – Carson-Newman swimming wrapped up its two-day matchup with nationally ranked Wingate on Saturday at the Wingate Natatorium in Wingate, N.C.
The Eagles competed against the Bulldogs over two sessions, opening Friday evening and closing competition Saturday afternoon. Wingate entered the meet ranked fifth nationally on the men's side and ninth on the women's side in the CSCAA November poll, while Carson-Newman came in ranked 17th on the men's side and 19th on the women's side.
"It was a quality meet overall," said head coach Ben Young. "A long travel day on day one, along with subpar swimming conditions, meant we were slow to adapt and not truly focused on the finer details of our races."
The Eagles struggled to get going on the first day of the meet but turned things around after returning to the Wingate University Natatorium on Saturday.
"The amount of effort was the biggest change from day one to day two," Young said. "The team's willingness to understand what it means to swim the C-N way was evident. The biggest pain point for us is continuing to start out flat on day one of meets," Young stated. "Whether it's from travel or day-one jitters, it's not the first time we've done it, and it's something we need to continue to harp on as we prepare for the second half of the season."
Despite a slow start on Friday, day two of the matchup with the Bulldogs saw several strong performances from the Eagles.
"We had three pool records, including the men's 200 medley relay," said Young. "Gabriel Morales also set pool records in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly."
Carson-Newman takes a few-week break for Christmas before returning to the pool for a road trip to Catawba on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at Johnson Pool in Catawba, N.C., beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST.
