Picot finishes top 10, Fisher top 15 in 7th place finish for Women’s Golf
Carson-Newman Women’s Golf used solid play from their top two to take a 7th place finish at the Oldfield Intercollegiate in a field of 13 teams, just two strokes out of the top five.
OKATIE, S.C. – Carson-Newman Women's Golf used solid play from their top two to take a 7th place finish at the Oldfield Intercollegiate in a field of 13 teams, just two strokes out of the top five.
Due to weather conditions yesterday, the event had been shortened to 36 holes. They were responsible for playing 26 holes today due two round one getting cut short yesterday.
"It was a tough weekend battling through freezing cold temperatures and weather yesterday, but I was glad to see some people turn that second 18 around today," said head coach Alyssa Montgomery.
Emery Fisher and Anaelle Picot led the way throughout the rest of round one. Through 10 holes in her first round, Fisher was -3. Four bogeys in a row to begin the day set the junior back to one-over, and she bogeyed two of her final three to shoot 75.
Picot was in a similar spot at three-under through ten to begin the finish of round one. However, from hole 15-18, Picot went +5 and bogeyed her final hole to shoot 75 as well.
Madison Miller was seven-over coming in to play the final eight holes of round one. The freshman finalized her first round relatively well, making five pars to shoot 82 (+10) in round one.
Grace Lambert was just two strokes behind her. Before the weather delay yesterday, Lambert had put a double and triple back-to-back on the card. She made 6 pars through the final 9 holes of her first round but doubled her last hole for an 84 (+12).
Rylee Tucker was at +7 coming in to finish round one. Tucker made two pars, finishing out her round to shoot 86 (+14). Parker Miller was playing as an individual and was clean through her final 9 holes before consecutive doubles on 16 and 17 to end her first round at 86 (+16).
Between the six players, the Eagles were eight over on the 165-yard par three 16th, which was tied for the hardest hole of the tournament at +0.79 to par. There were 22 doubles made throughout the day.
In round two, every Eagle carded at least one birdie.
Anaelle Picot started her day on the 3rd hole and bogeyed hole five before her first birdie of the day at the 484-yard 8th. The graduate student bogeyed both nine and ten, but parred five straight until she paired a bogey with a birdie at the 16th and 17th. She made two bogeys on her final two holes to end up at 76 (+4) in round two and was seven-over for the tournament.
Anaelle was 8th in the standings out of 77 golfers. This was Picot's third top-ten finish this season and fourth top-15 finish in a row.
"It was great to see Anaelle finish up there in the top 10 again and Emery right there, right there behind her. They are both leading us right now and still played solid with everything that we had going on the course this week," said Montgomery.
Emery Fisher began on hole four and carded four pars before her first birdie of the day at the par-five 8th. She went on to bogey the 10th, but put a two on the scoresheet at the par-three 13th. She followed that up with two bogeys and ended up 41 (+5) on the back nine thanks to a double at the par-five eighteenth. She made two more pars to round out a 77 (+5) and finished the event at eight-over.
With a 14th-place finish, this marked the fourth time this season the junior has finished inside the top 20.
Before the event, Picot was #43 individually in the nation and Fisher was #55. However, both golfers beat multiple top-20 players in the nation. Their rankings are expected to improve following this tournament.
Madison Miller was one under through four holes thanks to a birdie on the 6th. However, she bogeyed the 9th and doubled the four 10th before her next birdie followed at the 13th. Two more bogeys on the 15th and 16th helped the freshman come in at 39 (+3). She bogeys two of her last four holes to match Fisher with a 77 (+5) in round two. Miller was +15 overall and 37th in the standings for her best finish of the season.
Rylee Tucker had a challenging start with a double bogey, but bounced right back with birdies on the 7th and 9th. She made five straight pars from 11-15 before a double at the 16th. From there, Tucker parred out to go even on her final seven holes for a 77 (+5). She was +19 overall and 47th in the field.
Grace Lambert started out with two bogeys, but birdied the 7th hole. Three bogeys on the back nine were helped by a birdie at the par four 17th. She made a double at the 3rd and finalized her round with a bogey to shoot 80 (+8). Lambert was 50th overall.
Parker Miller (Ind.) made three pars through her first 9 holes when she birdied the 8th. She followed that up with a bogey at the 9th to shoot 40 (+4) on the front nine. After bogeying the 10th, Miller parred four straight and bogeyed her final hole to end up with a 79 (+7). She was +21 over the week and 53rd in the standings.
Carson-Newman finished +47 over the two rounds to place 7th in the field. The Eagles were one stroke back of #5 Eastern Florida State and two back of #4 SCAD Savannah. #17 UIndy took the team title at +27 as a team.
The Eagles will take a week break before their final regular season rounds of the year at the Lady Cougar Classic in Columbus, Ga. The action begins with 36 holes on March 30th with live scoring available on the Clippd website.
