JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's golf heads to Gainesville, Georgia for their first 72 holes of the 2025-26 season, where they will compete with six of the top ten teams in the nation for the Mizuno Intercollegiate.
The hosting North Georgia has selected Chattahoochee Golf Club as the hosting site for the challenging event. Although the course yields some challenging Bermuda greens, Wylie says the course itself is straightforward.
"We have a couple guys that aren't used to Bermuda greens, so that will be a challenge for them… it's just a matter of staying one shot at a time and sticking to the game plan and being level-headed and those kinds of things that I haven't seen this group of guys do," Wylie said.
It was a productive offseason on the recruiting front for Wylie, with seven new additions to the twelve-man roster. While the talent added to the C-N team is promising, this will be the first test of the rookie Eagles. All five of the players headed to North Georgia have never played a round in an Eagles uniform.
Qualifying for this first event in order from one to five was Dylan Frein, Brady Wentz, Bowen Wentz, Jack Bentz, and Theo Baker. That lineup includes three freshmen and two transfers.
"The qualifying within the team was very competitive, and I think that that's going to be what has prepared them for that. To get in the starting lineup, it's a really deep team. It's really difficult to do…I think that should have them pretty prepared."
The competition, though, is stout.
Nine of the fifteen teams in the field ended the season in the top 20 nationally. That includes the reigning national champion, West Florida and the NCAA DII individual champion from North Georgia, Hunter Smith. However, the Eagle's men's golf team views this as an opportunity.
"I think everybody's so excited to go play and just see where we stack up. They see we have a lot of talent. Playing against each other, they know we have a lot of depth. But then when you go play against other super highly ranked teams, you find out where you really are," Wylie said.
Eagles Men's Golf kicks off their season Monday, September 15, where they will play 36 holes and finish up on Tuesday with the remaining 18. Monday will be a shotgun start at 8:30 AM.
