8th-place finish for Men’s Golf marks best result of the season
The Eagles dropped from 5th to 8th in the final round of the Ralph Hargett Memorial, tying at +14 with Ferris State.
MONROE, N.C. – The Eagles dropped from 5th to 8th in the final round of the Ralph Hargett Memorial, tying at +14 with Ferris State.
Despite the fall in standings, this was C-N's highest finish of the season.
"Decent tournament for the Eagles through this was not the final round we had planned," said head coach Randy Wylie. "Dylan Frein played a solid final round which kind of held it together for the team. Overall, I can definitely see some improvement as we work toward the postseason."
The tournament was played in a non-traditional fashion thanks to weather delays yesterday that only allowed for 27 holes on day one. As such, the Eagles played 27 today to finish out the event.
Ian Schoonmaker picked up at even par but quickly made up ground. He birdied the par-five 17th and the 454-yard par four 1st before a bogey at the 5th to finish his second round with a one-under 71. This was a career collegiate low for the sophomore and helped him to be 14th after round two.
Brady Wentz was one-over through his first 9 holes of round two after birdies at the 9th and 10th. He made four bogeys in his final nine, but also birdied the par-four 4th. His second round was highlighted with back-to-back birdies on the 6th and 7th. He finished round two at 73 (+1). He was in 10th after round two.
Bowen Wentz was even coming in to finish his second round, but bogeyed the 15th and 16th. He followed it up with a birdie at the par-five 17th. He made six pars through the final seven holes to finish round two with a 73 (+1). Bowen was 48th after round two.
Dylan Frein was +1 as he geared up to finish round two. The freshman was clean through his final nine, aside from two bogeys that put him down for a 75 (+3). Frein was tied for 50th after round two.
Theo Baker was even par in round two before the start of the second nine. He made three bogeys, as he wrapped up his second nine, but birdied the 4th and 6th holes for a 73 (+1) in round two. Baker was 19th in the field after the second eighteen.
Stefans Spruzs (Ind.) ended his first nine at +3. He made one more bogey on the 9th hole, but recorded consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to shoot 35 (-1) on the back and 74 (+2) in round two. Spruzs was tied with Frein at 50th in the 96-man field.
Carson-Newman was tied for 6th after round two.
Dylan Frein began his final round looking for redemption. Frein birdied three of his first four holes and circled two more scores on the 12th and 14th holes. A few bogeys down the stretch would cut into his good round, but the freshman still finished with a 71 (-1) in round three to climb more than 10 spots in the standings. Frein was +5 over the three rounds and 37th in the standings.
Ian Schoonmaker began round three with a birdie at the par-four eighth but followed it with a birdie at the 9th. This seemed to be a theme of the day for Schoonmaker, doing the same with a birdie at the 10th before a bogey at the 12th, and again with a bogey at the 16th and a birdie at the 17th. He made three bogeys in his final stretch of holes for a 75 (+3) in round three and was +3 over the 54-holes.
Brady Wentz made four pars to start round three before a pair of bogeys at the 12th and 14th. He made eight pars in a row before two bogeys at the 5th and 6th. He wrapped his round with a par to shoot 76 (+4) in the final round. Wentz was three over across the three rounds.
He and Schoonmaker were responsible for the team's best finish, tied for 26th.
Theo Baker bogeyed his first hole but carded six pars after that. He bogeyed three holes on the back nine but birdied the par-five 17th for a 38 (+2) coming in. He went on to par five straight before a bogey on the final hole for a 76 (+4) in round three. He had the same mark overall.
Stefan Spruzs played his best round to wrap up the event. Spruzs made back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th before his third under-par score of the day at the 4th. He bogeyed the 7th, but kept his front nine under par with a birdie at the 9th. Another bogey would come at the 12th, but was negated with a birdie at the 13th. Spruzs bogeyed his final hole of the day to tie a collegiate personal best at 70 (-2). He was +4 over the event.
Baker and Spruzs were both tied for 30th in the standings.
Bowen Wentz struggled in round three, making five pars through his first ten holes and writing a double down at the par three 11th. He carded two more bogeys before his first helping score at the 17th to shoot 40 (+4) on the back. Wentz parred his first four holes of the front nine before a birdie at the 5th to shoot 76 (+4). The freshman was +9 on the week and finished 50th.
The Eagles fell three spots in the standings with their worst round of the tournament at +10 as a team. That was a seven-stroke difference from their next highest round. Their tie for 8th was three strokes off #46 Lenoir-Rhyne.
#5 Wingate won the team title at -26 while Emmanuel's Gabriel Hull won with a three-round total at -11.
Men's golf will have five days to tune things up before they head an hour up the road to play in the Tennessee River Rumble on March 23rd in Lenoir City. You can keep up with the action at cneagles.com or @cneagles on social media. Live scoring is also available on the Clippd website.
