OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – The C-N Men's Golf team put together a second round of three-under to hop two spots in the standings and put them in contention for a podium finish heading into the final day.
Carson-Newman made 32 birdies throughout the day that helped the Eagles put together their best round of the year. They currently sit in a tie for third place in the 16-team field.
"Super pumped about playing good back-to-back rounds. Now we get the challenge of being in contention and trying to follow up with a third good round," said head coach Randy Wylie. "These young Eagles are learning to fly."
Brady Wentz led the way for C-N in the first round. The junior did a good job keeping bogeys off of his card, with just two in the first 18. He made birdie on the par-four 10th and 12th, and circled one more three on #18 to shoot 33 on the back and 69 (-1) on the par 70 golf course.
Ian Schoonmaker wasn't far off Wentz. The sophomore kicked off his day with three bogeys but ended the train with a birdie on the 390-yard 12th hole. Schoonmaker carded an eagle on the par-five 2nd and followed that with a birdie at the 4th to shoot 34 on the front nine. His first round 70 (E) was good for a top 20 finish after round one.
Theo Baker was even par through 17 holes, matching a bogey on the 10th with a birdie on the 11th. He did the very same thing with a birdie on the 15th and a bogey on the 16th. He bogeyed his final hole of the day (number 7) for a score of 71 (+1) in the first round.
Bowen Wentz matched him with a score of one-over. Wentz started his day out with a birdie on the par-four 6th but bogeyed the 7th. The freshman found another under-par hole on the 12th, becoming the fourth Eagle of the day to birdie that hole. Two more bogeys in his final 10 holes gave Wentz a 71 (+1). He was the final score to count toward the Eagles in round one.
Dylan Frein was stacked closely behind Wentz and Baker, though. Frein started with a bogey on the 7th, and went back and forth with bogeys and birdies on the nine. Between holes 12 and 17, Frein made two birdies and three bogeys. He birdied two of his final three holes of the round to come in with a 72 (+2) in round one.
Owen Larson played as the individual in this event. Larson took care of the front nine with birdies on the 2nd, 6th and 9th holes to shoot 34 (-1) going out. Back-to-back bogeys at the 10th and 11th were followed up with six straight pars for a first-round 72 (+2).
After round one, C-N was tied for 5th in the 16-team field.
The men got off to a rocky start in round two, going +7 as a team through the first four holes. Thankfully, birdies down the stretch helped the team jump two spots in the standings.
Bowen Wentz also started on a five-par streak. He made bogey at the 11th but rallied in a major way. Wentz caught fire to record three straight birdies on holes 14, 15, and 16. He cleaned up the par-five 2nd hole with a birdie as well to shoot 67 (-3) in round two. The freshman elevated himself 20 places in the standings with a great second round. He is two-under in total and 8th in the standings.
Ian Schoonmaker was cruising through round two. Schoonmaker made seven pars in a row before a birdie at the 7th. He went back-to-back at the 18th and 1st as well to sit three-under through 11 holes. Bogeys on the 2nd and 4th holes nearly ruined the good round, but Schoonmaker closed out strong with four pars to shoot a second round 69 (-1). The sophomore is -1 through 36 holes and tied for 14th.
Brady Wentz struggled to find a groove in early the second round, carding three bogeys in his first four holes. He found his first birdie of the round on the 12th after he bogeyed the 11th and kept rolling from there. Wentz birdied four of his last five holes of the round two bring his score back to an even 70. The junior is one-under through 36 holes and tied for 14th,
Dylan Frein made two bogeys through his first five holes before finding his first birdie of round two on the par-four 14th. He helped himself on the par-five 16th with a birdie and cleaned up a double on the 5th with birdies on the 2nd and 6th holes. Frein shot a one-over 71 in the second round to bring his total to +3. Frein is 31st overall.
Theo Baker started with a double and a bogey on his first two holes, but cleaned up after that. The junior made two birdies on the back nine to shoot 34 (-1) coming in. Baker made bogeys on the first and 4th holes but circled a four on the par-five 2nd to bring his second round total to 73 (+3). Baker is +4 overall and 38th in the rankings.

Following that, Larson made six straight pars to end the day. He shot 74 (+4) in round two and is +6 overall. He rounds out the Eagles round at 48th in the rankings.
