GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Carson-Newman men's golf team shot a team-best round in the final 18 holes for a two-over showing as a team. That would move them up one spot on the leaderboard to finish 13th.
The Eagles had the fifth-best round of the day on Tuesday. All five players from Carson-Newman recorded rounds in the 70s or better.
"I'm very pleased with our finishing round this week, which gives much optimism starting into the season," said head coach Randy Wylie. "Brady played really well to lead the team. The sign of a really good ream is when your throw-out score is a 74."
It was Brady Wentz who led the way for the Eagles, carding four straight birdies from the start of his round (holes 15-18). From there, the junior would go on to bogey holes one and two, but would fire three more birdies on the front nine to notch a three-under 69. Wentz was the best finisher among the field for the Eagles, slotting in at 24th with a three-day total of +1.
Jack Bentz was the next best for Carson-Newman. The freshman started his day off with a bogey on number 16 and two holes later would double the eighteenth, but his luck would quickly take a turn. Bentz eagled number one from 120 yards out and would birdie the next hole to wipe his hole over par off the card. With two more birdies and three bogeys, Bentz would finish with a season-best 73. He finished 71st overall for the tournament with a three-day total of +15.
Theo Baker was the next best overall finisher for the Eagles. The junior was one-under through 10 holes before he bogeyed the eighth and ninth and would follow that with a bogey on 11 to shoot two-over 74. Baker had 14 pars on the day and finished 41st overall.
Dylan Frein and Bowen Wentz matched Baker's round of 74 on Tuesday. Frein kicked off his round with two birdies and two bogeys and was even par through seven holes. Despite two more bogeys on holes 11 and 13, Frein would birdie fourteen and par the fifteenth to come in at two-over. His three-day total was +12 and slotted him 65th among the field.
Bowen Wentz carded fourteen pars in his final round and was helped by a birdie on the par-five 6th to shoot even on the front nine. Two bogeys on the back would solidify his 74 and mark his best round of the tournament. The freshman improved by ten strokes from the opening round. He would end the 72 holes at +19 and 79th overall.
"We had three freshmen, a struggle of a second round, and a big bounce back with better rounds on the final day, which is a good indicator of heading in the right direction," said Wylie.
Carson-Newman Men's golf returns to the course when they travel on Monday to Albany, Georgia, for the Hurricane Invitational on September 22nd and 23rd.
