Eagles Named Back-to-Back SAC/CC Regular Season Champions
Carson-Newman secured the South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas regular season championship for the second straight year, finishing off an unbeaten conference slate with sweeps of Emmanuel (Ga.) and Erskine on Saturday.
DUE WEST, S.C. – Carson-Newman secured the South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas regular season championship for the second straight year, finishing off an unbeaten conference slate with sweeps of Emmanuel (Ga.) and Erskine on Saturday.
"Such a good weekend for us and all our pairs, and we keep getting better," said head coach Cat Collins. "Worship is an everyday, all-of-life response to who God is and what He has done for us. We talked as a team and wanted to use the gifts God has given us, especially on a weekend like this, to worship God and have grateful hearts for what He has done for us and the gifts He has blessed us with."
The Eagles opened the day with a dominant 5-0 win over Emmanuel, taking all five courts in straight sets. At the No. 1 flight, Trinity Hafey and Paige Halcrow earned a 21-9, 21-11 win. Ava Potts and Emerson Ahsmuhs followed with a 21-16, 21-13 victory at No. 2. Camryn Ehlers and Addie Smith secured a 21-13, 21-14 win at No. 3, while Morgan Foy and Lucy Bartee added a 21-13, 21-15 result at No. 4. Kelcey Peterson and Madison Trondle closed out the sweep with a 21-14, 21-13 win at No. 5.
Against Erskine, Carson-Newman once again secured all five courts, but faced tighter competition throughout the lineup. At the No. 1 flight, Hafey and Halcrow outlasted their opponents in a marathon opening set, winning 31-29 before finishing the match 21-15. Potts and Ahsmuhs picked up a 21-17, 21-12 win at No. 2, while Ehlers and Smith followed with a 21-17, 21-18 victory at No. 3.
The lone three-set match came at No. 4, where Morgan Foy and Lucy Bartee dropped the first set before rallying for a 21-23, 21-15, 15-8 win. Kelcey Peterson and Madison Trondle sealed the sweep with a 21-17, 21-19 result at No. 5.
With the two wins, Carson-Newman improves to 25-2 on the season and finishes conference play undefeated, claiming the South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas regular season championship.
The Eagles travel to Greeneville, Tenn., on Friday, April 10-11 for the South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament. The team will have the chance to win back-to-back conference championships.
