The Eagles are coming off a third-place finish on the men's side of the SAC Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Rylan Jordan was named male Athlete of the Meet, while Meiah Moss was named the SAC Outdoor Freshman of the year for her efforts. The men's side claimed third with 95.5 points, while the women's took fourth, missing out on third by just one point, 88 points.
The Eagles women's track and field team bested their projection by 20 points. While the men pushed through injuries, beating their project by 6.5 points. The squad's overall effort left an impression on head coach Kieran Showler-Davis.
"Really great for both squads, lots of fantastic performances from both sides," Showler-Davis said. "The ladies had a heck of a day and stepped up massively. They were so close to a third-place finish, beating their projection of 68 points. The men put up a great fight despite missing key pieces to finish third."
In the most recent United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, Carson-Newman men's outdoor track & field was ranked No. 15. The Eagles are one of two South Atlantic Conference squads ranked, led by No. 6 Wingate. The national event squad, which averages the top four marks in each event, slots the Eagles in third at the 100m and second in the 200m. Rylan Jordan owns the sixth-fastest 100m time at 10.15 seconds, and the second-fastest 200m, 20.44 seconds, just 0.01 seconds behind the nation's best mark. Amine Kasmi is fourth in the 200m at 20.48 seconds. C-N's 4x100m relay team is fifth in Division II with a time of 39.63 seconds.
The big names in Rylan Jordan and Amine Kasmi are taking the weekend off. The two sprinters have already qualified for the National Championships starting on May 22nd. Not only does this give athletes one final chance to hit the threshold needed to head to Nationals, but also could be the final time many seniors step onto the track or field that have been so impactful for head coach Kieran Showler-Davis.
