Indoor Track & Field heads back to Lynchburg for shortened Liberty Open
With the impending snowstorm sweeping across the Southeast, the Eagles prepare for a one-day stop at Liberty
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the second time this season, Carson-Newman Indoor Track & Field is heading back to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Liberty Open. Although with the anticipated snowstorm this weekend, it has been cut down to a one-day affair on Friday.
To begin this season, the Eagles made the trek on December 4th for the Liberty Kickoff.
During that event, it was the multis that made a strong first impression. Sam Verrol and Alden Wetzel finished in the top five in the Group B Heptathlon. Verrol began his junior season taking the third and final place on the podium with 4945 points. While Wetzel made his C-N debut after transferring from Arkansas State, he took home fourth with 4827 points.
While freshman Meiah Moss made a strong first impression at the Liberty Kickoff. She picked up a sixth-place finish in the Group B Pentathlon with 3083 points in her debut, after being named a SAC Athlete to Watch.
Most recently, at the UNC Asheville Collegiate Opener, four athletes took first place, and another 12 got podium finishes.
On the track, Rylan Jordan and Favour Ekpekpe have dazzled to start the year. Rylan Jordan continues to display his blistering pace, winning the 60m dash with a time of 6.76 seconds, after taking first place at VMI in the same event, 6.75. Meanwhile, Ekpekpe edged Jordan in the 200m finals with a 21.51-second time.
In the field events, Cadence Dolgin, the C-N pole vault record holder, continues his impressive freshman campaign, taking first place in pole vault, clearing 4.55m.
The fourth Eagle to find the top step was Carlos Kouassi in the triple jump with 13.93m. The senior was named a SAC Athlete to Watch coming into the season.
